Las Vegas: Blackjack, Toroweap and Trekkers

A couple summers ago, some friends and I took a road trip from Texas through L.A. to my beloved Northern California, specifically to my old stomping grounds in Chico. Neither of them had ever been to NorCal, and both love complaining about Texas summers. Needless to say, I was pretty excited about taking them to a place where the air is clean(ish) and the weather is perfect.

On the Tapas Trail in Madrid, Spain

In the Spanish capital, David Whitley discovers that there’s more to tapas than a bog-standard dish of patatas bravas.

Dining out in Madrid

When it comes to eating, it’s hard to find anything to dislike in Madrid. One of Spain’s great inventions is the menu del dia – a three course meal, often with a drink thrown in, for around EUR10 to 15. That’s lunch taken care of quite beautifully, and when it comes to the evening, there are tapas.

Things to Do in Tulum & Quintana Roo

I’ve been to Mexico a dozen times. Maybe more. But in April I took my first ‘family’ trip to Mexico – my wife and I and our two sons, Emmett (4) and Hollis (not quite 1 at the time). We spent one week in and around Tulum, which is about 90 minutes (125km / 78 miles) from Cancun and an hour from Playa del Carmen (the ferry port for nearby Cozumel).

Our original goal? To spend a week on the beach doing not too much: lounging around, eating tacos, swimming, building sand castles, taking walks on the beach, and just enjoying the sunny warm weather. (Dad also had a personal goal to go cave [continua.....]

The London Weekend Getaway: Brighton

Brighton smells like oysters – that briny, seaside smell. Which I like, so kind of like the smell of fresh baked bread, it just makes me hungry. Being perpetually willing to eat in Brighton (a town on the south coast of England) works in my favor as there are many, many wonderful places to eat. Unfortunately, I am only here for a weekend so it seems impossible that I will be able eat at them all.

Tiny European Countries – Amazing Races!

Editor’s Note: The following post is by Renato Losio, editor of RunAbroad.com.

Running a race is an alternative way to visit a new city: no traffic, a fast (or not so fast, according to your training) sightseeing tour and one more excuse for a weekend away. But in some destinations you can take the experience to the next level, visiting most of a country during a race. Here are our suggestions in Europe, you can choose between city runs and trail ones.

A Day Advenure in Iguazu Falls, Argentina

I know TLC told us that we shouldn’t go chasing waterfalls, but I bet you Chilli, Left Eye and T-Boz have never seen the Iguazu Falls in Argentina. If so, they would never “stick to the rivers and the lakes that they were used to”. Instead they would be taking speed boats under massive water avalanches, zip-cording through the jungle and repelling blindly off giant cliffs.

Central Lisbon on Foot

Editor’s Note: David Whitley takes a walk around one of Europe’s most underrated cities, Lisbon, discovering weird transport, free wine and plenty of history.

Lisbon’s Must-See Attractions?

At a music festival, it’s all about the depth of the bill. An event with one huge name backed up by a series of mediocre ones is rarely going to be as rewarding as one with a series of good bands, but no obvious headliner. Lisbon fits firmly into that category. It doesn’t have an Eiffel Tower, a must-see museum or a knock-out cathedral; there’s no one thing that you can fix upon as an absolute key attraction. But the collective power of what it does have far outranks many more popular cities.

Maui Suggested Itineraries

Maui tours, attractions and activitiesMaui is perfect if you’re into adventure, relaxation or a little of both. There is so much to do for those partial to land, sea or air. Here is a sample of some of the activities you can do on Maui during a 3-day vacation:

Gili: The Ultimate Island Paradise

The Gili Islands are the ultimate island paradise. Enough said, this blog entry is complete.

…Okay, we’ll give you more than just that.

The Gili Islands are a chain of three tiny islands off the coast of Lombok, or a two hour speed-boat ride from Bali. The chain consists of Gili Trawagan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. The islands have no cars, police or fresh water (bottled water for drinking, yes, but showers and sinks are all salt water). There were five of us in the group and we stayed on Gili Trawagan, the largest of the three islands and the furthest [continua.....]
